Expertise: Professor of Indoor Environment
Background:
Prof.dr.ir. Philomena M. Bluyssen is a full Professor of Indoor Environment at the Faculty of Architecture and the Built Environment of the Delft University of Technology in Delft. In the past ten years, she was involved in and/or initiated multiple field and lab studies on the indoor environmental quality of classrooms and their effect on children. She created the Senselab (https://delta.tudelft.nl/en/article/video-senselab-prevent-sick-building-syndrome), in which tests can be performed with people under different environmental conditions (air, light, acoustics and thermal), different settings (classroom, office, etc.) in the Experience room as well as tests for individual senses (smell, sound, vision, warm/cold) in the four test chambers. Since the COVID-19 pandemic, both field studies and lab studies have been performed specifically in educational environments to study ventilation and air cleaning techniques to reduce airborne transmission. At the beginning of 2022, an educational movie on aerosols, transmission, and ventilation in educational spaces was launched (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=bTiE6bF_PZo) (see also: https://www.tudelft.nl/en/stories/articles/present-ventilation-guidelines-insufficient-in-the-fight-against-the-coronavirus/).
